Sealants

A dental sealant is a protective shield that acts as a guard against tooth decay. The dentists at All Pro Dental Care help local Fairfax, VA and Merrifield area residents by applying sealants before the decay has a chance to set in.

Sealants Q & A

What Is a Dental Sealant?

A dental sealant is a very thin plastic shield that is applied to the top of the molars. The 6-year molars (those molars that are third from the back of the mouth) and the 12-year molars (those molars that are second from the back of the mouth) are the most common places to place dental sealants. These molars are particularly susceptible to decay because they have a number of small pits and crevices that bacteria can get trapped in. Since the molars are the hardest teeth to reach while brushing and flossing, some people are unable to care for them in quite the same way that they care for the more prominent teeth. The dental sealant helps you to avoid that damage.

How Are Dental Sealants Applied?

The application of dental sealants is very simple and is completely noninvasive (no drilling required at all). The dentist will first paint a layer of gel onto the surface of the molars. The tooth is then allowed to dry. After that, the dentist will apply the sealant atop the gel. To secure the sealant into its proper place, a laser light is then shined onto the sealant. The light will cure the sealant, hardening it into a barrier that bacteria won't be able to penetrate.

How Long Do Sealants Last on Average?

The longevity of sealants varies from one patient to the next. At a minimum, most sealants last for around three to five years. However, many people who got dental sealants on their 6-year and 12-year molars as a child still have the sealants intact when they reach adulthood. To maximize the lifespan of sealants, patients should be vigilant about brushing and flossing each day. Regular dental checkups are also important, as the dentist will evaluate the condition of the sealants during the exam.
