Crowns & Bridges Q & A

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is essentially a cover-up for a tooth that is damaged physically or for a tooth that the patient feels is not aesthetically pleasing. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped shell that is generally crafted out of either porcelain or ceramic. This shell is created to match the exact size and shape of the tooth that needs to be covered. The dentist will apply an extremely strong dental bonding cement to the natural tooth before the crown is moved into its position. Once the crown is fitted atop the natural tooth, it will be there permanently. A crown may be a good solution for cracked teeth, chipped teeth, or severely darkened teeth. Crowns are also frequently used to protect teeth after procedures like root canals, and they may be used to protect new dental implants.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a dental device that is made to replace missing teeth. In most cases, a bridge is made to replace a small group of missing teeth, but it may be used for a single missing tooth in some situations. A dental bridge replicates the appearance of the missing natural teeth, allowing the patient to have a full smile again. The bridge uses the existing teeth on both sides of the missing teeth as a support system. Once the dental bridge has been affixed to the support teeth on either side, it will be a permanent part of the mouth.

How Do You Take Care of Crowns and Bridges?

While crowns and bridges are prosthetic teeth, they require the same kind of care that genuine natural teeth do. It is very important that patients continue with a regular dental care routine that includes daily toothbrushing, regular use of dental floss, and regular check-ups with the dentist to get the best results from their crowns or bridges.
