Preventative Dentistry Q & A

At What Age Should Children Go to the Dentist for the First Time?

Seeing the dentist early and on a regular basis can be integral in the prevention of dental problems in children. The American Dental Association recommends that all children see the dentist on or before their first birthday. For children who have early tooth eruptions (well before their first birthday), they should see the dentist six months after the first tooth breaks the gums. The early dental visits help to lay the groundwork for oral healthcare routines. If a child grows up following the routines that they learned early in life, they will prevent disease and decay far more often than children who never learned those habits at all.

What Can You Expect at Your First Dental Checkup?

The first appointment is the ideal time for us to get acquainted with you and your dental concerns. We will discuss your medical and dental history with you first, and will then talk about any problems or concerns that you may have. As your dentists, we want to provide you with all the knowledge that you need to maintain great oral health and to prevent problems in the future. During your exam, each of your teeth will be evaluated by the dentist and a high-tech digital radiography machine to take images of the teeth if needed. The dentist will diagnose any emerging issues so that they can be resolved as quickly as possible.

How Often Should Checkups Be Scheduled?

Regular checkups are a major component of preventative dentistry. Most people should see the dentist for regular checkups twice a year. However, people with serious gum disease or other dental issues should see the dentist more often than that. By seeing the dentist twice a year, you may be able to prevent issues like cavities and gum disease.
