What Is the Take Home Whitening System?
The take home whitening system involves daily teeth whitening sessions at home. The dentist will take a mold of your mouth to create custom-fitted whitening trays. The whitening trays and whitening gel are then taken home and used every day for between 30 minutes and two hours. This continues for two weeks in total, at which point you'll visit the dentist to evaluate your teeth whitening results.
What Is the In-Office Whitening Option?
In-office teeth whitening is done entirely in the dentist's office. With this method of teeth whitening, the dentist will prepare your mouth by placing a protective barrier on the lips and gums. The dentist may administer a prophylactic cleaning to make sure that the teeth are free of plaque and debris. The gel used for an in-office teeth whitening is peroxide based. This whitening gel is applied and is then left on the teeth for anywhere from 15 minutes up to half an hour, depending on the degree of whitening needed. A special dental lamp, a very bright light that improves the effectiveness of the whitening gel, may be used as well. Most patients notice a difference in their teeth shade after just one session, but if even whiter teeth are desired, an additional session can be scheduled. While in-office teeth whitening is more expensive than the take home system, the in-office teeth whitening procedure produces the quickest results.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
Anyone who feels unhappy with the color of their teeth may be a good candidate for teeth whitening. Coffee stains, tea stains, nicotine stains, red wine stains, and even age-related darkening can be treated with either in-office teeth whitening or the take-home whitening system.
