Dental implants serve as permanent nonremovable replacements for missing teeth. Each implant is created as a replacement of the tooth that was lost so that it will look like a natural tooth in terms of shape, size, and color.
Dental implants are primarily made from titanium or a titanium alloy. Titanium and its alloys are biocompatible metals that are very osteophilic, which literally translates to "bone loving." The metal is placed in the jaw, allowing the jaw itself to serve as a strong anchor for the implant. The metal tooth is screwed onto the support metal frame in the jaw. The metal tooth is never visible because it is covered with a crown made of tooth-colored porcelain or ceramic.
The length of time needed to install dental implants varies widely from one patient to the next. For patients who already have missing teeth and have no tooth fragments left behind, the process can begin quickly. For those who need to have a damaged tooth removed, the new implant installation process must wait until the extraction area heals. During the first stage of the dental implant surgery, the dentist will place the implant base within the jaw. It will be even with the bone, just underneath the gum line. A healing period is then required while the bone adjusts to the presence of the implant base.
After that, the dentist will surgically expose a portion of the gum so that the implant base can be seen. At that point, a post will be added to the implant base. The post, known as an abutment, will then be topped with the tooth part of the implant. Finally, a custom crown will be placed over the new implant, allowing it to blend in with the rest of your teeth. While the dental implant process can take three months or longer, the time investment is well worth it for patients who will finally have a permanent replacement for their missing teeth.
